I sure hope I'm writing the title to the book right; i am too lazy to go and get it. Anyway, the usual spoiler tag must be enacted so...
***SPOILERS ALERT***
There we go. Now, onto business.
I know the book came out a while ago but i just finished reading it now because for some ungodly reason i didnt feel like reading it. I don't know why, it was an awesome read! I mean, the whole book is essentially the climax to the whole series and perhaps even the other series (at least starting at the 2nd series) because they tie up many of the loose ends and problems that had developed between characters over time. Such as Cinderheart and Lionblaze, Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw, essentially everyone and Leafpool, and even Crowfeather and Breezepelt. Respectively, they get together after he figures he chooses his own destiny, they also get back together after he forgives her for lying, and Leafpool's kits forgive her for what she did, and as for Breezepelt and Crowfeather....well, Crowfeather still hates him but now he says he never meant to /but/ now its too late. So he tries to kill him. Like a good father. Okay, he didn't- he told him to leave but, come on, with the amount of senselessly awesome death in the last 5 chapters of that book, who /wasn't/ thinking of doing some blind murder? And to elaborate on the thing with Leafpool; Crowfeather regrets what they did but is also proud because his children were very important to saving the clan, and her kits also forgive her in the face of impending horrible battle, and it is especially apparent that they forgive her when Hollyleaf's last words were that she was glad she got to know her mother. Oh yeah, did i mention Hollyleaf /died/? I know, i was also sad to see her go too. I mean, i have always said how much of a crazy bitch she was but in a sense, i am sad that she was gone. We lost a great Warrior Code Zealot with that book. Kinda replaced her with Dawnpelt though. She's my new favorite crazy-ass cat.
Now to move onto some more of the brutal parts of the book. By brutal i mean the endless blood-flow and consistent death that comes out of /probably/ the last half or so of the book. Well i have already told you how Hollyleaf was killed, by Hawkfrost by the way. Some other notworthy deaths were Ferncloud and Mousefur. Ferncloud was sadly killed by Brokenstar, the big douche himself. Immediately following it however was his own death caused (ironically) by his mother, Yellowfang. I thought it /was/ pretty cool how she killed him once and for all after already killing him with deathberries back in book.... Three, i believe? Forest of Secrets? Well, she had a good run, 7 kits and alive since the beginning of the first book. As for Mousefur, sadly, she was killed by a random dark forest cat, who immediately afterward was chased off by Longtail. It was sad seeing the oldest cat in probably all of the clans killed by a nameless warrior but she did live a good, long life. Some, more amusing kills (if you'll call, them that were probably when Lionblaze was over in Shadowclan territory along with Blackstar. I seriously /hope/ i am not the only one who found amusement or at least some strange kind of respect for Blackstar after this. Basically, he is confronting 2 /alive/ dark forest warriors (both from Shadowclan) and basically Blackstar goes (after recovering from his lost life (who knows how many he has now?)) "Bitch. Nobody betrays /my/ clan!" and he kills him (Redwillow) in /one/ swift blow to the chest. Literally, he strikes out in one move and gouges his chest. I believe the book even described Redwillow, looking down at his chest, back at Blackstar, then collapsing, dead. It was such an amazing display of badassness by Blackstar. I already liked him as a character but that just made him all the more awesome. Then right after that, Lionblaze takes on Shredtail and, reassuring his invincibility (which did i mention he actually picked a fight with Shadowclan to prove to himself that he could be a normal cat if he wanted to? I know, he is crazy.), he violently murders him a second time, essentially removing him from everywhere. And just to add onto the fact, right after Lionblaze kills Shredtail, Blackstar leans over and says he's glad to fight alongside him. Also finishing some more loose ends, Brambleclaw kills Hawkfrost again after Ivypool fails to do so, trying to avenge Hollyleaf's death.
Ofcoarse, the most significant death of the books was when Firestar died. Now, I'm gonna be honest, i did /not/ expect Firestar to beat Tigerstar in the final battle and if i hadn't already known he would die - from my stupid friend's spoiling the book for me by reading Bramblestar from the end of the book - i would have thought he might have been able to live to lead longer but apparently with Tigerstar's final death, he rained lightning down onto Firestar and killed. I can't say i liked his death but it was definately a necessary one for the story i suppose. Wish they could've had a better one though.
On a side note i would like to give some more miscellaneous views about the book. I did not care for the ending, it was very abrupt and i can see how it was pretty good in a sense that it quickly finished off the series, cleanly. But, the completionist side of me really wanted to see what happened after the battle. Like, what happened to Cloudtail? According to the book, he was severely injured in the battle and the relationship between Lionblaze and Cinderheart? They just say they will be together before the battle and that's it. I suppose it is good that they ended it though. Any longer and i am positive the storyline would have gone completely bad especially since the overall main character (Firestar) was killed in the last book, essentially meaning the ending of the series, kinda like Star Wars when Anakin Skywalker died. That was when they ended it.
I would also like it to be known that on an interesting side note- Blackstar is almost without a doubt, the oldest cat alive up to the last book. Judging by the books, he was a warrior at the start of the first book of the first series as the deputy of Shadowclan under Brokenstar whcih likely means he was even older because he would have had to have trained an apprentice and probably have had experience to be a deputy. So it is quite obvious he is the oldest leader and cat there is. And he is still leading his clan and judging from him losing a life in the last book, he probably has a few more lifes left. Pretty amazing considering cats in Thunderclan now are graying and becoming elders (Mousefur, Dustpelt, Firestar, etc.) While Blackstar is still out there, dealing out death like nothing with a couple lives to spare.
I was also going to say something about the lack of Jayfeather at the end of the book but then i thought, having a Jayfeather PoV chapter would have just ruined the experience and also that immediately before the battle, Jayfeather had his own amazing adeventure, reuniting both the living clans and Starclan so i guess it only made sense. He was still my favorite charatcer though and i regret not having one last sarcastic comment before the end of the series.
Another thing which happened which really didn't have anything to do with anything, was that Brightheart was pregnant. She had 3 kits midway through the book and nothing really happened with them. At first i assumed they were important because Brightheart /was/ a kin of Firestar and maybe that they were part of the prophecy but that was immediately swept away by the fact that there was no time for them to actually do anything. So i thought that was pretty pointless.
Another thing i did not particularly care for was that for the entire battle, /nothing/ was talked about in Riverclan. There was no description of the battle that happened over there even though there was one. The only thing we got from the Riverclan side of the River was that; "oh hey, yeah, they won btw, hooray." that's it, it was very dissapointing.
